The Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister for Malaysia, Mr Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi was asked during the opening of the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) Berlin tourism fair, whether his 32 million strong Asian country was tolerant for jews and gays.

Whereas at first he sidestepped the question, the interviewer insisted after with Mr Mohamaddin said : “Homosexuality. I don’t think we have anything like that in our country.”

An aide to the minister, realizing the possible backlash to his remarks, later suggested to the European press that Mr Mohamaddin was simply echoing the federal government’s stance that ‘lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBT) are not officially recognised’.
