An unnamed New Zealand woman in her late twenties was arrested over her posting a message on Facebook in which she commented on the Christchurch shootings of last week.
Under the country’s Human Rights Act, her offence carries a maximum penalty of three months’ imprisonment or a $7,000 fine.
The woman from Wairarapa is a parent to a child at a Masterton primary school, and its is understood that other parents had complained to the principal and the police. According to a police spokesman, the Facebook post “upset a number of people because it referred to the events in Christchurch”.
The message was afterwards brought down relatively quickly, but not before “a number of people had already seen it and raised concerns”.
