I haven’t seen it in great detail myself, pretty much skipped through it, but apparently the Chinese censors thought there were too many ‘gay’ scenes in the Oscar-winning ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and cut out three minutes from the movie. It isn’t a first for the Chinese censors of course, as they famously ‘bleep’ out all ‘gay’ references during the yearly Eurovision song contest as well.
The biopic movie about singer Freddie Mercury is therefore being shown in Chinese theaters without some 10 scenes, making the movie a full three minutes shorter. Although homosexuality is legal in China, the government has been known to interfere whenever ‘gay people’ are shown in television programs or films.
The Chinese press did not specific which were the ten scenes that have been cut but were sure LBGT groups will report on it soon. Interestingly, they did leave in the part where Freddie tells his band members that he has aids, but bleeped out the word itself.
