Trump Blasts Brexit “Flextension”

US President Donald Trump criticized the newly found extension of the Brexit deadlock between the EU and the UK. In a tweet he stated: “Too bad that the European Union is being so tough on the United Kingdom and Brexit. The E.U. is likewise a brutal trading partner with the United States, which will change. Sometimes in life you have to let people breathe before it all comes back to bite you!”

His comments come after the 27 member states of the EU granted an extension to UK Prime Minister Theresa May until 31 October 2019 in order to come up with a deal.

It was President Donald Tusk who confirmed the news on Thursday morning shortly before 2 am central European time, after news had already leaked out that the EU had offered a postponement until the end of October. The European heads of state and the UK government agreed after hours of negotiations.

ckASa07yQR1Ad_-pPKlZThe new date is nicely between what PM May herself had asked for (June 30) and what EU Council President Tusk had suggested (March 30, 2020).

It has become a compromise, especially because French President Emmanuel Macron was bothered and kept insisting on a short delay.

“This delay is flexible, but a bit shorter than I expected, but it is long enough to find the best possible solution,” President Tusk said at a press conference after the summit.

It really seems to be the postponement of the last chance. “Don’t waste this time,” Tusk said. The new postponement of the Brexit means that a “no deal” exit, foreseen for 12 April , is now canceled.

The British came up with a name for PM May’s continuous demands for extensions to her Brexit deal, calling the situation a ‘flextension.’
