The French authorities have started an internal investigation into possible police violence. The investigation comes after images have surfaced showing how a cop at the May 1 demonstration in Paris puts his baton in the pants of one of the detainees.
The images show how civilian agents, with helmets, arrest a man on Boulevard du Montparnasse, in the south of the capital. Several protesters chant “everyone hates the police”. One of the agents then puts his baton in the man’s pants at the buttocks. The arrestee is then removed from the crowd.
The Paris police prefecture asked the National Police Inspectorate (IGPN) to investigate the facts, as well as two other cases of alleged violence surfaced in videos.
The first shows a policeman who brutally hits a demonstrator, the second another cop who throws a cobblestone during the demonstration.
The Paris public prosecutor has also opened a judicial investigation for the three cases.
The May 1 demonstrations in Paris took place in a tense atmosphere, with skirmishes that broke out before the departure of the event and that continued throughout.
“If a mistake is made, administrative and judicial sanctions will follow,” said Interior Minister Christophe Castaner.
