Longtime TV host Ms Mary Bubala was fired last week from her Baltimore presenting spot after she dared to pose a ‘rather obvious’ to some (considering the facts) and ‘rather racist’ to others (considering the fact that 60% of the city’s population is African American) question on air.
After the resignation of Mayor Catherine Pugh (see our related coverage) over a self-serving fraud scandal involving contracts in exchange for sales of her own children’s books, Ms Bubala asked during and interview about the last three Baltimore mayors — Sheila Dixon, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, and Catherine Pugh, saying: “We’ve had three female, African-American mayors in a row. They were all passionate public servants. Two resigned, though. Is this a signal that a different kind of leadership is needed to move Baltimore City forward?”
Viewers complained about the apparent ‘racist’ undertone of her remarks and the longtime presenter was let go the day after.
Ms Bubala immediately apologized in the wake of the backlash, saying the question did not come out the way she had intended.
