Tensions are heating up in Turkey after their soccer team captain, Emre Belözoğlu, was interviewed by a toilet brush in Iceland.
The Turkish team surprised the world last week during the European Championship qualification match by beating World Champion France 2-0.
Next up for them in the group is a match against Iceland.
One Icelandic supporter, clearly keen on getting the Turkish fans angry, joined the group of journalists at Reykjavik airport who all wanted a quote from Turkish soccer captain Emre Belözoğlu as to what he expects from the match against Iceland.
The devil lies in the details however as the Icelandic supporter didn’t bring a microphone with him, but rather a toilet brush.
“What was done to our players is basically an act of violence. Iceland’s authorities must apologize for this ‘primitive’ treatment, and take steps to remedy this folly,” spokesman for Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party Ömer Çelik wrote on Twitter Monday.
Turkish media are covering the scandal, saying that the welcome for their national football team at Iceland’s airport was “racist”, “rude”, “disrespectful” and “offensive.”
